"Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan." This reminds me of our great national hero Dr. Jose Rizal as he trekked many miles from the hills of Odenwald,Wilhelmsfeld to get to Heidelberg University for an education he will forever be remembered. Galing Foundation is re-living the heroism of many of us who dreamt of sharing our good fortune to the young illiterate oppressed children of Quezon and Mindanao. Galing's goal to literacy was warmly welcomed by Columbus folks as they generously provided food boxes, powdered milk,(courtesy of Ms. Ellen Balauitan) brand new backpacks with school supplies partly donated by Basilio Clinic), and of course hardcover books that'll open avenues and inspire the youngest Filipinos to dream and explore.
Hosted by K&M TLC K-12 Academic Tutoring Center, Columbus welcoming committee role modeled Fil-Am generosity at its finest. Headed by FAA President John Campos,( who excitedly brought in donated goods few days prior to turn over) Mr & Mrs. Arnold Taganas, Mr.& Mrs. Daryl Guernsey, FAA VP Dr. Jo Galang Ray, Dr. Bernie & Mrs. Manasan of Ft. Benning,Ms. Norma Dodd and NaFFAA's Fil-Language Immersion students
with frontliner 6 year old "reading wiz,"Kevin Guernsey, genuine generosity poured. Added to the photo opp was Lauren Daya-Luetgers creative eyes for the lenses.

For dinner ,baby back ribs barbecue was prepared by 16 year old Mike Dominguez. All these... for the children in the Philippines they want to meet in the future. A family occasion worthy of 2 hr.drive. This event was so meaningful that no distance is too far to touch the lives and give hope to the dreams of these young poor children threatened by the ultimate poverty in human history- Illiteracy.
To Arjho and Ces, thank you for taking the time driving in an afternoon where you should be with your family.

Maraming Salamat Galing at Mabuhay! Got more books to haul here.......any volunteer/s???

The Regional Office of the Social Security Administration (SSA) held its 2008 Diversity Day Celebration on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 in the Sam Nunn Federal Center, downtown Atlanta. This year’s theme was “Triumph through Diversity”.

The event was attended by approximately 100-150 employees who were entertained with a program designed to be educational and a fun way of learning about different cultures.

Our very own Arjho Turner, Galing Foundation volunteer, was one of the performers for the event, wowing the federal employees with her traditional Blaan Tribal dance. Organizers for the event, received numerous favorable comments about her performance.

Other performers from the Asian communities included the Southeast Korean Dance Association and a Middle Eastern Dancer. The keynote speaker was Dr. Josephine Tan. Food included a variety of dishes from numerous countries.

Our special thanks to Arjho and Galing Foundation for supporting the event.

lamlifew village museum

The first village museum in the Philippines is being established in the hamlet of Lamlifew, in an interior highland part of the municipality of Malungon in the Province of Sarangani, Mindanao. Initiated by the indigenous B’laan inhabitants of Lamlifew, this museum will provide information and growing specimens of the dozens of varieties of upland rice that the B’laan have managed to nurture — notwithstanding the ascendancy of monocropping over the last century. This rice museum will be taken care of entirely by Lamlifew villagers, including the cyclical planting of the seedlings that they find in their continuing search among the other highland B’laans for even rarer varieties.

This village museum will be launched at 6 p.m. on Monday, 3 December 2007, at the Museum of the Filipino People (Finance Bldg.), National Museum of the Philippines, Manila. Attending the evening event is one of the project’s principal sponsors, Governor Miguel Domiguez of the province of Sarangani. He joins the B’laan women who are coming to Manila from December 1–10, to introduce the Manila public to their museum and to the wealth of rice culture preserved by the B’laan.

The launch of the Lamlifew Village Museum at the National Museum is a symbolic demonstration of the support by a national cultural agency of a village-based cultural initiative. According to Marian Pastor Roces, the independent curator who introduced the Lamlifew B’laan effort to the National Museum, the launch signals a new kind of trusteeship. Instead of centralizing the idea of caring for and interpreting cultural materials exclusively at the national level, the Lamlifew Village Museum moves towards decentralization. This direction will mean that eventually, it will be understood that the most effective custodians of local cultural and indeed even scientific heritage, are to be found at the village level. Roces finds it impressive that the Lamlifew Village Museum will have its own institutional identity separate from any national or even regional agency; and equally impressive that the National Museum’s Director, Corazon Alvina, recognizes the vitality of such an initiative.

Lamlifew is an unusual village in that, in its quiet, unhurried ways, it has been a catalyst for tradition-sensitive change. A few years ago, Lamlifew women formed themselves into a association, and set about establishing an enterprise based on traditional beadwork and weaving. They eventually registered themselves with the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission, likely becoming the first such formal entity instituted by a Philippine indigenous group. They were assisted by yet another rare agency: the Indigenous Peoples Development Program (IPDP), created by the Provincial Government of Sarangani as acknowledgement of the provincial profile: more than half its population consists of indigenous peoples. The IPDP staff, many of whom are B’laan themselves, have made it a point to provide assistance that encourages and allows for independent action on the part of villagers. Such independent action is embodied in the Lamlifew Women’s Association, now strong enough to undertake a museum project.

It was the IPDP that first introduced the Lamlifew women’s association to Marian Pastor Roces, president of TAOINC - a museum planning agency. By conceptualizing the village museum project, she is thus bringing together the wishes of the Lamlifew women’s association; and the advice, oversight, and technical support of the IPDP. Assisting Roces with the launch, fund-raising, project implementation and promotion/sales of Sarangani B’laan upland rice is Marlene Po, indigenous peoples (IP) advocate and cultural worker

For information on this project, please contact TAO INC, at 8163726, Room 206, LaO’ Centre, 1000 Makati Avenue corner Arnaiz Avenue, Makati City.  For invitations to the December 3 museum launch or details about B’laan upland rice, please contact Marlene Po at (0917) 9700052.

International Paint Pals, Youth Art Connection in cooperation with Galing Foundation, Inc. invites Filipino children to create artwork for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. Paintings should encompass the theme of "Peace and Goodwill in the Olypic Spirit" and those selected (10 from Atlanta & 15 from Philippines) will be exhibited in Beijing, Atlanta and New York.

All submitted artwork must be original creations by youth aged 6 to 18 and must be received by December 1, 2007.

The exhibitions are made possible by International Paint Pals, a program of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro
Atlanta, in cooperation with the Beijing Youth Federation and the City of Atlanta.

Galing Foundation, Inc. (GFI), a non profit foundation for Filipino indigent children announces its search for 25 outstanding artwork by Filipino children living in the
Philippines and 10 outstanding artwork by Filipino children living Atlanta.

GFI is a volunteer coordinating partner with the International Paint Pals (IPP), a worldwide youth cultural organization that brings children together through the universal language of art. For the past eleven years IPP has held art exhibitions in many countries for the United Nations, The Olympic Games, and other global institutions. Over 100,000 young artists in 50 countries have participated in our programs on various themes of international interest and concern. We now have an exciting exhibition opportunity, and we would like to invite Filipino children in the Philippines and Atlanta to participate.

“We are looking forward to an even greater event in Beijing which will enable young artists from around the globe to present their creative messages in an exhibition designed to promote friendship, goodwill, understanding, and peace among all people everywhere
in today’s complex world”, according to Linden Longino Director, International Paint Pals.

The Beijing Youth Federation (BYF) was founded in 1949 and is the prime organization representing children and youth in Beijing. It is composed of 29 member organizations which serve over 4,000,000 kids in the city. One of BYF’s goals is extensive communication and cooperation with young people in all other countries.
International Paint Pals (IPP) was started in 1995 by The Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, USA. In 1996 IPP became a program of Youth Art Connection, a division of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta which serve over 30,000 children and youth. One of
IPP’s goals is to promote cultural understanding and friendship among kids worldwide.

BYF will obtain artwork from Chinese children and will arrange for the exhibition to be held in a prominent location in Beijing. The desired opening date will be 1 June 2008, which is National Children’s Day in China. However, it is possible that the
exhibition will open on an earlier date in 2008. Working through local volunteer organizers in each area, IPP will obtain artwork from young artists in as many other countries as possible and will send them to Beijing for the exhibition there. IPP will also
have an exhibition in its Youth Art Connection Gallery in Atlanta and possibly at the United Nations in New York City. The artwork will also be displayed on the websites of GFI, BYF and IPP/Youth Art Connection.

GFI’s goal will be to send the best 25 works to IPP in Atlanta, to arrive no later than 15 December 2008, or earlier if possible. Essays and poems written by the children will also be
welcomed along with their artwork.
